AI and ML for Health and Life Sciences

Through partnerships with Emory University, the CDC, and industry leaders, Georgia Tech bridges the gap between cutting-edge AI research and real-world clinical application while training the next generation of interdisciplinary health-AI innovators.

AI for Health and Life Sciences is a transdisciplinary field that utilizes advanced machine learning and computational biology to accelerate the entire biomedical continuum. It encompasses the development of intelligent systems that not only improve diagnostics, personalize treatment, and streamline operations, but also democratize access to high-quality care by removing geographic and economic barriers. Beyond clinical delivery, this field fundamentally transforms biological discovery, from decoding genomic sequences to accelerating drug development, creating a feedback loop where cutting-edge innovations are rapidly translated into accessible, equitable health solutions for diverse populations.

Healthcare organizations face significant barriers to the safe and effective implementation of AI, including concerns about accuracy, patient safety, bias, interpretability, and privacy, yet the potential to reduce costs, improve patient outcomes, and close gaps in care is enormous. By developing trusted, collaborative AI systems that integrate seamlessly into clinical workflows, this research can enable earlier diagnosis, more effective prevention strategies, and precision medicine approaches that tailor treatments to individual patients. 

Through its Health and Life Sciences initiative, IDEaS catalyzes a campus-wide ecosystem for effective healthcare delivery, ranging from risk assessment and computational phenotyping to personalized genomics and predictive analytics. Georga Tech research in this area is anchored by established pillars like the Integrative Cancer Research Center and the Computational Health Initiative, and the Shriners Children’s Research Institute at Science Square, a new $153 million hub where Georgia Tech engineers and Shriners clinicians co-create pediatric AI, robotics, and gene therapies. Georgia Tech further innovates through the NSF-funded AHeAD (Accessible Healthcare through AI-Augmented Decisions) Center, building AI systems for shared decision-making and accessible healthcare. These efforts are bolstered by the College of Science’s AI4Science Center, the Institute for Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, and Society (INNS), and the massive computational power of the Nexus AI Supercomputer. IDEaS connects this diverse community through interdisciplinary seed funding, academic events, and industry workshops, ensuring a continuous pipeline from fundamental discovery to life-saving clinical application.
